Plan B in the kitchen

I'm missing an ingredient

Replacements depend on what you're making. Find an alternative and its limits before you change the recipe.

How to find an ingredient substitute

  1. 1Choose the ingredient and the amount the recipe calls for.
  2. 2Say what you're making, because the same swap behaves differently in a sauce, a cake or a meringue.
  3. 3Read what may change before deciding whether the replacement works for you.

An example

The tool includes alternatives for butter, eggs, milk, cream, cocoa, cornstarch and other common ingredients, with adjusted amounts.

What to keep in mind

Some roles have no direct replacement, especially when an ingredient provides structure or air. For allergies and intolerances, also check the label of the alternative product.
